![]() Mount the piece inside a frame but with the lift of the mount behind, it will have more depth. Or buy your favourite frames, take the glass out if needed and pop it on your walls. Whilst a painting on paper may have a lot of texture and marks that you want to see clearly, this I would not choose to frame behind glass.Īgain find a local framer as they will be able to advise and show you the many ways of framing. With prints these are totally fine behind glass as they are usually flat (unless embellished). Now there are many ways you can frame a print or a painting. ![]() I personally like a wider mount so there is more space between the artwork and the frame. Again do some research and find what your style is. If your painting does not come with a mount, then you will need to decide what size mount if any you would like. So for example the painting above in the black frame was sold with a mount, the size was 12 x 10 inches with the mount. If your piece comes with a particular mount you can easily find a frame to fit that size. Something to note is whether the piece comes with a mount (mount for inside of frame to give space between painting and frame) or without. I’m hoping to further expand this page with more framing guidelines in the near future so make sure to check back if you’re looking for more inspiration. These pieces tend to come unframed so that gives you more freedom with framing and your personal style. (5) Vintage finds: I love going thrifting to find unique frames – you can take these to your local framer to have glass and wire replaced if they are empty when found. (4) Budget friendly ready-made frames: Target, Blick Art Supply, Ikea, Michaels, JoAnn Fabrics ![]() (3) Higher end ready-made frames: Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn, West Elm (2) Mail in custom framing service: and are two high quality options at affordable pricing. (1) Local Framer (McMillen’s and Fusion are great options if you’re local to Traverse City!) This is a more expensive option, but really allows you to customize your artwork to perfectly complement your space. My favorite frame sources to choose from include: ![]() Check the description for the frame and it should tell you if it comes with UV protected glass. Local framers and mail in framers will provide this, but Ikea for instance is not UV protected. UV Protection: It’s great when you can find affordable frames, but if you spent a lot of money on your print and want it to last for years to come, I recommend making sure your glass has UV protection. No Mat: A mat allows the artwork some room to breathe, standout and take up some more room on your wall, but depending on your space, taste and vision this is completely your preference! If you are not able to frame your print promptly, I recommend at least removing it from the cardboard packaging, and if received in a tube, lying it flat with some clean pieces of paper over the image and laying heavy books on top to safely flatten it while you wait. I charge you the price they would charge you. In order to protect these prints in the long term, I recommend having them framed as soon as possible since acid containing materials (such as cardboard) can cause them to yellow over time. For larger orders I can arrange framing for you through my local framer. Frames really are an extension of the artwork and a custom frame can help all styles of artwork fit seamlessly into any space. It’s really fun to see all the different frame materials, color options, as well as mat board colors.
